On Friday, the director of the LAS Institute of Economics Dr. Nina Linde and the Scientific Secretary of the Institute Polina Kolobova, who represents the list of the Greens and Farmers’ Union in the Riga municipal elections, met with the residents and staff of the social care center “Liepa” to find out the real needs of Latvian seniors. Epidemiological safety measures were followed during the meeting.
Every Latvian senior deserves a full old age. Unfortunately, statistics show that Latvia ranks first among European seniors at risk of poverty – the proportion of seniors at risk of poverty and social exclusion has already reached 50% in 2019, which means that every second Latvian senior is experiencing difficulties and does not receive sufficient support. The number of seniors at risk increases every year. Greater state and municipal support is needed to improve the well-being of seniors. The aim of the LAS Institute of Economics is to help the municipality find solutions to improve the quality of life of Latvian seniors.
“Liepas” seniors actively participated in the discussion. Problems that concern the older generation include: expensive medications; injustice in the institutions; local government indifference; empty promises without result; fragmentation; and moving abroad people. The seniors recommended more active involvement in the political process, so that everyone’s needs were heard and definitely participate in the elections! During the conversation, several proposals were mentioned that should be taken into account by the municipality:
- Reduce bureaucracy and facilitate the procedure for receiving support for pensioners;
- To support Riga nursing homes by offering more municipal support;
- The municipality must be more responsive to the needs of pensioners;
- Cheaper medicines, co-financing for medicines from the municipality;
- To take care of single mothers and fathers, even though they have 1 child, both moral, legal and financial support from the municipality must be provided;
- To support also large families – “the key to the new generation to grow up”;
- Support small and medium-sized farmers;
- Merge parties, reduce fragmentation.

On August 29, from the list of ZZS, we hope that we will be able to influence the events in Latvia, not only by studying the problems of the national economy, but also by practically taking care of the well-being of our citizens.
